UN70 Wall of Wishes
Would you like to wish the United Nations a happy birthday and express your hopes and dreams for the Organisation and “We the Peoples”?
This is your chance; come and take a picture of yourself at the General Assembly, express your wish on your personalised photo postcard and become part of our gigantic 3D UN70 Wall of Wishes.
UNRWA, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine refugees, will be running a free kids activity all day at the Grand Place. The workshop will give children the possibility to build and decorate their own dream catcher featuring a photograph of a Palestine refugee child living in Gaza, the West Bank, Syria, Jordan or Lebanon. This activity will be the opportunity for children (and for their parents!) to learn about Palestine refugee children’s lives and how UNRWA, with the support of the EU, helps them realise their dreams.
Food Tent and Grasshopper farm
Ever tried Thaï or Congolese crickets? How about a slice of bread with carrot-mealworm spread and a glass of organic Belgian milk to wash it down?
Here are some of the products that can be tasted at the Grand Place during the UN Day.
All dishes – some exotic, others very local – are grown in Belgium by companies that love good food and share the ideal of sustainable production.
And, if you want to know more, there’s even a demonstration of grasshopper growing by Brussels own grasshopper farm.
Turn the World Blue
To help mark the 70th anniversary of the United Nations, iconic monuments, buildings, landscapes, museums, bridges, and other landmarks across the globe will be lit up blue – the official colour of the United Nations. On UN Day, 24 October 2015, the eve of the celebration on the Grand Place, you can already join us to admire the Brussels City Hall and its surrounding buildings turned UN blue.
The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) was founded after World War II to help Europeans displaced by this war. Since then, it has helped millions of people displaced by conflicts all over the world.
The main task of UNHCR is to ensure that refugees can apply for asylum and find shelter in another country. To assist refugees in emergency situations, such as Syrian refugees who have fled to countries near Syria, UNHCR sets up and coordinates refugee camps, and assists them also in urban environments.
More durable solutions must nevertheless be found, which is why UNHCR supports local integration, voluntary return and resettlement.
A Climate Flashmob towards an ecological and energetic transformation to a sustainable society based upon renewable energies will occur at 14:30 on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at the new pedestrian area of the Bourse (near the Grand-Place). This is on the occasion of the “UN Day” and with a focus towards the UN Conference on Climate Change (COP 21) to be held in Paris in December 2015.
